-You should study History to know your past, study Geography to understand your surroundings, study Science to know how the universe works, study your languages to be a part of your roots, and so on so forth.
-So basically in the entire school life, all the assignments are Google searches, the only difference is that the students have to upload the data in their brains and see how good their servers are.
-The problem with today’s parents is that they don’t understand that they are being completely foolish when they say something like this.
-So clearly, the “I want”, “my son” and “to become an engineer”, all the three parts of this common saying are absolutely horrendous.
Let us start with a math problem. Everyone, take out your notebooks and write down the question. If your syllabus tends to infinity and the time taken to attend school and tuition, participating in extra-curricular activities and socializing is equal to the entire day. Then find the value of “Are you going to become an engineer?” And class, don’t forget to use the formula: Your career option = what you want to do. This is the easiest math problem ever made. The answer is “It does not matter”.
It is understood that you should know your basics. You should study History to know your past, study Geography to understand your surroundings, study Science to know how the universe works, study your languages to be a part of your roots, and so on so forth. But is it completely necessary to pile up so much information on children and force them to memorize all of it, test them on their recollection of this information and draw their career path on its basis? A student in our country is never given the opportunity of choosing what they want to learn and then is blamed for not having any interest in what they are forced to learn.
Let us talk about how broken the educational system is in our country. The 14 years of torture that the board puts on students is sold by the name of education. Out of these 14 years, 12 years are used to teach the students what the board thinks is right for them. I am not saying that it is wrong to impart knowledge to anyone, it’s the best gift that can be given. The problem arrives when these students start getting tested on them. Again, taking tests about what you’ve learned and how can you apply them is something very interesting. The problem arrives when the tests are all based on how well you can mug up these textbooks. So basically in the entire school life, all the assignments are Google searches, the only difference is that the students have to upload the data in their brains and see how good their servers are. The educational system in India does not promote learning, does not ask students to apply what they’re being taught, does not teach new ideas, all they do is shove up textbooks, force them to use a highlighter on every important line that can be asked on a test, which is literally the entire textbook, and then just fill up paper after paper in examinations to make sure you go on to the next class.
There are roughly 40 students in every class in India. A period goes on for 40 minutes or so. If and when something new is taught in a class, students will surely have doubts. If every student just has one doubt each, that’s 40 minutes of your class. How does this system even work? And then how do schools and parents at home expect these children to not only understand what is being taught but also to learn them, apply them and show interest in the subject.
Human beings are gifted organisms. If it were not so, then our entire population wouldn’t have come so far in this world altogether. It is very clear that every individual has multiple talents. If your child or your student is not being able to “perform” well, then it is really not their fault. It is your fault because you could not assess them and guide them towards what they were made for. You being a Math teacher and expecting all your students to be good at math is senseless. And if a student isn’t good at math, it does not make them worthless, it just means they’re not good at math.

The job of a teacher is the most important job in the country. They are not only responsible for educating the future generations of the country, but the duties also put indispensable emphasis on building their personalities, helping them grow empathy, preparing them for this harsh world, and making sure that there is humanity still left within themselves after all this. But the problem with our teachers is that they think the most important duty is to finish the syllabus. It’s not just their fault, the management obviously does put so much pressure that the teachers are forced to, otherwise, they won’t get their salaries. The root of the problem is that the teachers are incompetent, a good teacher will be able to finish the syllabus and do all of those things mentioned above.
I want my son to become an engineer, and my daughter has to become a doctor. The problem with today’s parents is that they don’t understand that they are being completely foolish when they say something like this. You can only think about the solution when these parents are made aware that saying something like this wrong on so many levels. Firstly, it is not for you to decide what your progeny is going to become when they grow up. Secondly, even if it were up to you to decide, then you cannot come up with random goals for them, without assessing them. It’s like asking your deaf and dumb child to become a singer. Thirdly, it is highly sexist for you to assign specific gender-free career options to specific genders. So clearly, the “I want”, “my son” and “to become an engineer”, all the three parts of this common saying are absolutely horrendous.
Conclusion: I am not a preacher, I am a victim. I have been a part of this education system and I know what a monster it can be. But again, Indians are considered to be smart people across the globe, it is also because of this same education system. I am not saying that it is completely wrong, I am saying that it isn’t suitable for the children of the entire country, and if you just focus on educating a niche group of students, then only a small percentage of your youth population is educated.
